I analyzed 50,000 LinkedIn posts. These hooks get 4ร— engagement.

Over the last quarter, we fed 50,000 of the highest-performing LinkedIn posts into Reachvo's content intelligence engine. We wanted one answer: what actually makes people stop scrolling? The results were clearer โ€” and more repeatable โ€” than we expected.

The single biggest predictor of engagement wasn't the topic, the author's follower count, or even the time of day. It was the hook: the first one or two lines that appear before the 'see more' fold.

The 4ร— pattern

Posts opening with a specific, contrarian, or curiosity-driven hook earned roughly 4ร— the engagement of posts that opened with context or a greeting. The gap held across industries and audience sizes.

Engagement distribution across 50,000 analyzed posts, grouped by hook type.

The five hooks that consistently won

  • The contrarian: challenge a widely held belief in your niche.
  • The specific number: lead with a concrete, surprising metric.
  • The open loop: pose a question the reader needs answered.
  • The confession: admit a mistake or hard-won lesson.
  • The bold claim: stake a clear, defensible position.

"People don't decide to read your post. They decide to read your first line, and the first line decides the rest."

The takeaway is simple: treat your hook as the product. Everything after it only matters if the hook earns the click.
